49ers are an Italian Italo House and Eurodance project made up of producer and DJ Gianfranco Bortolotti and singer Ann-Marie Smith. It was named after the San Francisco 49ers American football team because Smith was the 49th singer in the casting.

They had a number of hits on the US dance charts, including Touch Me and Don't You Love Me , both of which took number one there in 1990.

The 49ers are an example of two characteristics of Italo House: the taking of lyrical hooklines from other compositions and the unbalanced use of English grammar and speech. The rhymes that often make up the chorus on Italo house songs usually only make sense in a very impressionistic way, if at all.

history

The debut album

The project was founded in early 1988 by producer Gianfranco Bortolotti. The debut single Die Walküre is based on a song by Chaba Fadela and Cheb Sahraoui called N'sel Fik and reached number 20 in France. Shadows followed a year later . Shortly thereafter, Dawn Mitchell was won over to head the act. Touch Me consists partly of a sample from Aretha Franklin's Rock-a-Lott , the chorus comes from Alysha Warren's own track Touch Me . Don't You Love Me , which consists primarily of a sample from Jody Watley's hit Don't You Want Me , also entered the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at number 78. Other borrowed phrases and melodies are scattered throughout the album and makes it an acoustic scavenger hunt for the listener. The singing of the 49ers comes from Alysha Warren (real name Alyesha Wallen), except for I Will Survive , Die Walküre and Shadows , and was lip- synched in the videos by Dawn, who also took over the vocals for I Will Survive .

Touch Me became a top 3 hit in Great Britain in January 1990 , the successor Don't You Love Me reached the top 20 of the British single charts at number 12 .

The following albums

A remix album and the single Believe in Me (co-written and sung by Dawn) were released in 1991, a little later she left the project and was replaced by Ann-Marie Smith. The next album Playing with My Heart came out in 1992, this time with Ann-Marie Smith as the singer. Five singles were released from it, Move Your Feet , Got to Be Free , The Message , Everything and Keep Your Love .
