4a Architekten is an international architecture firm based in Stuttgart , founded in 1990 by the architects Matthias Burkart, Eberhard Pritzer (partner until 2001), Ernst Ulrich Tillmanns and Alexander von Salmuth. 4a Architekten have another office in Moscow, Russia. The range of topics includes the planning and execution of new buildings and renovations of public buildings such as leisure and thermal baths, sports and health facilities, cultural and educational institutions as well as hotels. One focus of the office is on pool construction.

Corporate structure

The activity includes the areas of architecture, design and construction management. The architects' office is owned by the founders Matthias Burkart and Ernst Ulrich Tillmanns and, since 2018, Andreas Ditschuneit. Another managing director of 4a Architekten GmbH Stuttgart is Martin Reimer. Alexander Schamne is the managing director and partner of 4a Architekten GmbH Moscow. Together, the companies currently employ around 45 people (2019).

Before starting their own business, the founders of the office at Behnisch & Partner, Stuttgart, looked after the new plenary hall of the Bundeshaus in Bonn (1992). In 1992, the office for the MBM System Pavilion, an exhibition stand based on the modular principle, received recognition at the Saxon State Prize for Design . The first thermal bath to be built , the TuWass thermal and leisure pool in Tuttlingen, received the BDA award Good Buildings Baden-Württemberg in 2002, as did the renovation of the Röchling lecture hall in Mannheim Castle. A large part of the swimming pool projects can be traced back to competitive successes, such as the Bodensee-Therme Konstanz (1st prize, 1998), the Spreewald Therme in Burg (1st prize, 2003), the Syrdall Schwemm school and leisure pool in Luxembourg (1st prize , 2005) and the Therme Wien with health center (1st prize, 2006).

The first international project is the Else Club wellness park in Moscow. The Therme Wien from 2010 is the most comprehensive project with a total area of ​​approx. 75,000 m². At the International Hotel Application Award 2011, the Spreewald Thermenhotel was honored in the “Best Hotel Concept” category. In 2014, 4a Architekten on the Côte d'Azur renovated and rebuilt the listed Villa Le Trident by the American modernist architect Barry Dierks .

4a Architects are founding members of the German Sustainable Building Council - DGNB e. V. and with the primary school in Frankfurt-Riedberg (1st prize, 2001) together with the Passive House Institute Darmstadt in 2004 planned and implemented one of the first passive house schools in Germany.
