Barry Dierks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barry Dierks (* 1899 in Pittsburgh ; † 20th February 1960 in France ) was an American architect of modernity . He was active in France, especially in the Côte d'Azur from 1925 to the 1950s.

Life

Barry Dierks, son of WC Dierks, director of the C. C. Mellor piano factory, studied architecture at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh , where he graduated in 1921. He continued his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Léon Jaussely's studio.

To finance his stay in France, he took a job at the Choillet bank. Here he made the acquaintance of the bank director Colonel Eric Sawyer, a former British Army officer who became his lover and lifelong partner. In 1925 the two decided to settle in the south of France. The decision was based on Dierks' professional ambition and the growing demand for country homes in the area from wealthy clients, mostly British.

In Théoule-sur-Mer in the Alpes-Maritimes department , Dierks and Sawyer discovered a 6000 m² isolated site with an inaccessible bay and a private beach on a private peninsula on the Pointe de l'Esquillon , where they found their house, the Villa Le Trident buildings.

From 1925 until his death, Dierks had more than 100 orders for new buildings as well as the renovation and expansion of existing villas. His customer base, made up of aristocrats, artists, and entrepreneurs, appeared to have been built only through word of mouth.

During the Second World War, Barry Dierks took part in humanitarian missions before leaving the region; Eric Sawyer joined the resistance. In 1946, General Georges Catroux left a note of praise for her activities during the war in the guest book of Villa Le Trident .

In 1956 his leg was amputated after illness. He died on February 20, 1960; Eric Sawyer lived until 1985.

Executions

According to a study from 2004, 102 construction sites have been registered by Dierks. Among those orders were 66 UK and 25 French customers. Almost a quarter of the villas were built for aristocrats.
