4th Dimension (or 4D ) is a development environment for database applications. 4D was originally developed for the classic Mac OS . 4D has also been available for Microsoft Windows since 1995 . The manufacturer of 4D is the French company 4D SAS .

Since the first version of 4D in 1984, which Laurent Ribardière implemented as a relational database ( RDBMS ), the product has continuously developed from a single-user application to a client-server system with numerous plug-ins and interfaces via ODBC to other common ones Database systems like ( MySQL or Oracle ). In 1992 the 4D client-server version was introduced.

With the current version of 4th Dimension (4D v18) it is possible to create single-user applications, client-server solutions, web server integration and other web service-oriented applications (such as SOAP - XML ) with just one product. 4th Dimension is available in languages such as German, English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Hebrew, Arabic and Korean.
