The 4th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry - regiment of the United States Army during the American Civil War .

period of service

The 4th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment was concentrated in Rockland , Maine on May 20, 1861 under the command of Colonel Hiram G. Berry . Four more companies were added to the Knox County regiment . When 4th Maine entered service on June 15, it had 1,085 men.

On June 17, the unit moved to Washington, where it was housed in camp on Meridian Hill to defend the capital throughout June. From July 16-21, the regiment advanced towards Manassas, where it took part in the first battle of the Bull Run . In the course of the battle, 23 men were killed, 27 others were injured and 41 were missing. Following the battle, the regiment was again used to defend the capital Washington DC.

When the first soldiers completed their 30-day service in September, they were to be forced to serve in the army for a total of 3 years. Due to the mutiny that followed, Company H was disbanded by November and 100 men were transferred.

In March the regiment of the Second Brigade, Third Division, and Third Corps of the Potomac Army was subordinated and on March 17th advanced to Peninsula. There it was used in the Peninsula Campaign and fought a total of seven battles before it took part in the Northern Virginia Campaign from August 27 to September 2. There it lost a total of 114 men in the second battle at the Bull Run on August 30 . 14 died in battle, 85 were injured and 15 were missing. Just one day later, 10 soldiers were killed in the fighting around Chantilly, 2 officers and 34 men were wounded and 8 more were missing. At the Battle of Gettysburg , the regiment could only fall back on 332 soldiers.

A memorial was erected in Gettysburg for the 4th Maine.

Of the total of 1,440 soldiers who served in 4th Maine, 170 (including 14 officers) died on the battlefield or succumbed to their injuries. Another 137 (including 2 officers) died as a result of illness. 443 men were wounded in fighting in the civil war and 40 were captured.
