5-9 High Street

A residential building is located at 5-9 High Street in the Scottish city of Annan in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988.

history

The building was built in the middle of the 18th century. In the 1790s the Burgh bought it and set up a secondary school in it. In this, among others, Edward Irving and Thomas Carlyle were trained. In 1820 the school was housed in a new building and this location was closed. James Little , Solicitor and Provost of Annan, converted the building into a residential building. In 1997 the building was inscribed on the Scotland List of Endangered Structures. It stood empty for a long period of time, which caused its overall condition to deteriorate. After various plans for restoration and re-use had been developed, the building was sold in 2010 and restoration began.
