Replica of the 55 PB in the Steiff Museum

55 PB was the name for the first movable toy bear from Steiff , one of the first teddy bears .

Richard Steiff designed this bear based on the model of the brown bears in what was then Nill's zoo in Stuttgart . As can be seen from the type designation, the bear was 55 cm tall, made of plush (P) and the limbs could be moved by hanging the limbs with string (B). It was presented for the first time at the Leipzig Toy Fair in 1903, but only caught the eye of an American on the last day, who ordered 3,000 pieces at a price of 8 marks per copy. Not a single one of these bears has survived. The 55 PB was replaced by a successor model just one year later. At the World's Fair in St. Louis , the Louisiana Purchase Exposition , was sold 1904 12.000 bears. For that were Margaret and Richard Steiff gold medal.
