A mansion is located at 5 Arthurlie Avenue in the city of Barrhead, Scotland . The building is in a residential area in the city center off the main road. In 2010 the villa was added to the Scottish Monuments List in Category C.

history

The owner of the villa was a Dr. Calderwood , who worked as a doctor and surgeon. The Glasgow architects Honeyman and Keppie were entrusted with the planning . Charles Rennie Mackintosh worked for Honeyman and Keppie since 1891 and shaped the style of numerous buildings. To what extent Mackintosh was also involved in the planning of 5 Arthurlie Avenue is not clear. Construction began in 1899 and was completed the following year. In the 1930s, a student made drawings of the villa for Honeyman and Keppie. The drawings archived today in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow are likely copies of these documents.

description

A semicircular tower emerges from the asymmetrically designed front of the two-story building, which houses the staircase and ends with a slate-covered, semi-conical conical roof . To the left of the tower steps lead to the raised wooden entrance door, which is set off by corner stones. In the interior there are glass works with floral motifs in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement .
