The building of the 6th elementary school "Am Großen Garten" is located at Fetscherstraße 2 in Dresden and is listed as a cultural monument of the city of Dresden .

history

The schoolhouse was called 6th middle school at the beginning . From 1966 the school house was named after Otto Grotewohl , the first Prime Minister of the GDR. In the early 1970s it became a polytechnic high school . From 1990 the school was named after the Czech pedagogue, theologian and writer Johann Amos Comenius . The school building was closed in July 2008. From October 2013 to summer 2015 the building ensemble was completely renovated. The 6th primary school "Am Großen Garten" has been located in the building since 2015.

The building, built by architects Gottfried Kintzer and Ehrenfried Kubin from 1957 to 1958, was built as a "pavilion school", consisting of a three-storey main class wing with two pavilions, which are connected by intermediate wings. It was built in a "mixed construction" with a "sandstone skeleton facing". The window parapets are colored plastered; the building has a flat gable roof . The main entrance is flanked by sandstone arcades . The open spaces were designed by Heinz Hirsch.
