8 deer jaguar claw ( Mixtec : Iya Nacuaa Teyusi Ñaña ; Spanish Ocho Venado ; * 1063 in Tilantongo ; † 1115 ibid) was the most important Teuctli of the Mixtecs .

Life

The name 8-deer also indicates the year of his birth. He was a later son of his father, the ruler of Tilantongo 5-crocodile rain sun, with a concubine. As such, he originally had little prospect of the throne. However, he was very successful as a warrior. He first carried out numerous conquests together with his brother 12-movement jaguar blood. After he was murdered by a third party, 8-Hirsch became the sole ruler. He eliminated numerous Mixtec petty princes and competitors efficiently, mostly through capture and sacrifice , and married their widows or daughters. He was the first, if not the only Teuctli who succeeded in uniting all three Mixtec city leagues in the highlands, in the lowlands and on the coast under the capital Tilantongo. Relatives of subjugated and sacrificed nobles eventually allied, captured 8 deer and sacrificed him. Although he left some descendants pretending to be the throne , the Mixtec empire he had built quickly disintegrated into local principalities and city leagues after his death.

The outstanding history of 8-Hirsch and his life path, in particular his warlike endeavors and successes, but also his dynastic interdependence were recorded in the Codex Nuttall . Other codices such as the Codex Colombino (Mexico), the Codex Becker I (Vienna), the Codex Vindobonensis (Vienna), the Codex Bodley (Oxford) and the Codex Selden (Oxford) at least mention him.
