history

Monitor Rusalka in the dock in Helsingfors

The 9-inch cannon M1877 , which was used by the Imperial Russian Navy, was, in contrast to the cannon of the same caliber of the army, not a new development, but was a conversion of the 9-inch cannon built by Krupp and the Obuchow factory M1867 . The drawings of the Army Office formed the basis of the renovation. The conversion of the weapons began in 1881. In that year the guns No. 46 and No. 147 of the gunboat Lawa were handed in for conversion. The conversion of the guns No. 52, 53, 57 and 60 of the gunboat Russalka began in the same year.

In 1890 there were a total of 12 9-inch M1877 cannons on the ships of the Imperial Russian Navy , another was in storage and six were currently being converted.

construction

The length of the tube was 5016 mm, which corresponds to 22 calibers. The tube had 52 puffs with a depth of 1.52 mm. The weight of the weapon with breech was 15,348 kg, the breech alone weighed 491 kg.

The weapons fired projectiles with two copper guide rings each. Three different types of bullets could be used. The grenade with a body made of ordinary cast iron weighed 113.4 kg, was 2.5 calibers in length and was filled with 5.02 kg of explosives. The grenade with a body made of chilled cast iron weighed 126.2 kg and was also 2.5 calibers in length. There were also grenades made of steel with a weight of 126.2 kg and a length of 2.7 calibers.

Black powder was initially used as the propellant charge, before a propellant charge made of brown powder weighing 33.6 to 35.3 kg was used. With both types of propellant charge, a muzzle velocity of 471 m / s was achieved, with a barrel elevation of + 8.7 ° this resulted in a firing range of 3660 m.

The mounts were taken over unchanged from the predecessor type 9-inch cannon M1867 .
