AS Kiran Kumar

Aluru Seelin Kiran Kumar (born October 22, 1952 in Hassan , Karnataka ) is an Indian space scientist. He has been chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization since January 14, 2015 and is responsible for the development of key scientific instruments on the Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan spacecraft . Kiran Kumar was previously director of the Ahmedabad Space Applications Center .

Life

Kiran Kumar Aluru Seelin was born in 1952 into a Lingayat family in the Hassan district (in the Indian state of Karnataka). He graduated from the National College of Bangalore University with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics in 1971 . He then received an M.Sc. from the same university in 1973. in electrical engineering. He then went to the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore , where he obtained an M.Tech. in physical engineering.

Kiran Kumar started his career at the Space Applications Center in Ahmedabad in 1975, where he worked on “Space borne Electro-optical imaging instruments”. He has stayed at the institution since then and has been director of the electro-optical systems group since April 2012. He has represented the Indian Space Research Organization at many international forums, e.g. B. at the World Meteorological Organization and the joint India-US working group for civil space cooperation. He is also chairman (CEO) of the ISRO committee for the surveillance of the earth by satellites.

Awards

  • 2014: Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, for contributions to technology and science.
  • 2015: Honorary Doctorate from the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai
