The AEC Reliance is a bus model from the British manufacturer AEC in Southall , West London, England. The model was produced between 1953 and 1979. A total of over 8000 buses of this type were built. The name was used between 1928 and 1931 for an earlier model from this manufacturer.

Two prototypes were made in 1953 . One body was made by Duple , the other by Park Royal Vehicles . Series production began in 1954 and ended in 1981.

During the production period, the original chassis with a length of 9.14 m was initially extended to 10.9 m (1962) and later to 12 m. Used different came diesel engines from 7.7 to 12.4  liters of displacement . The engine was located under the floor between the axles . Synchronized transmissions from AEC and ZF and a semi-automatic transmission from AEC were used. In addition to Duple and Park Royal Vehicles , bodies were also supplied by Marshall and Weymann Motor Bodies . During the construction, customer-specific requests were largely taken into account, but as usual in the United Kingdom there was only a passenger door at the front.

The Reliance competed with the Leyland Tiger Cub and Leyland Leopard during its production time , although AEC was taken over by Leyland Motors in 1962 . From 1966, both the Reliance and the Leopard lost market share to the Volvo B58 .

In the 2000s, some buses of this type were still in use in public transport on the island of Malta .
