The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds , English: Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds ( AEWA ) is an international treaty in 1996 as an offshoot of the Convention of the species of wild animals ( Bonn Convention ) was concluded.

Intention and content

The agreement protects 255  water bird species in Africa, which as a rule occur mainly through their migration across borders in several countries and sometimes also in European or Eurasian countries. AEWA signatory states agree to take measures to protect migratory waterfowl and their habitats . In general, these measures relate to the protection of species and habitats , the control of human activities, investigations and observations and, last but not least, education and information. The program is therefore closely linked to the general ecological protection of wetlands , as regulated, for example, in the UN Ramsar Convention .

The strategic plan focuses on

  • strengthening species protection and restoration and reducing the causes of unnecessary mortality,
  • ensuring that the use or management of the migratory waterfowl populations on their flight routes is sustainable;
  • the establishment and maintenance of a coherent and comprehensive network of managed protected areas and other areas;
  • ensuring a sufficient amount and quality of habitat in the wider area and

ensuring and strengthening the knowledge, capacity, recognition, awareness and resources necessary for the agreement to achieve its conservation objectives.

Organization and Contracting States

Contracting States:
  • Contracting parties
  • Contract signed but not in force
  • AEWA is a sub-organization of UNEP , the United Nations Environment Program. Organs are the meeting of the parties , which takes place regularly every three to four years at different locations, the standing and technical committee (standing, technical committee) as a somewhat more frequent conference, and the secretariat (UNEP / AEWA Secretariat ), which are located on the UN campus in Bonn.

    As of November 2008, 62 of the 118 neighboring countries in Africa, Europe and Central Asia had joined. At the end of 2019, the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterfowl had 80 parties: 38 African states, 41 Eurasian states and the European Union .
