AMS symbols

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AMS symbols (AMS stands for the American Mathematical Society ) are two font styles with 128 mathematical symbols each . They are mainly used with TeX and LaTeX .

history

The AMS was one of the first to introduce the typesetting system used TeX. The character set of the Computer Modern fonts turned out to be too small for the needs of the AMS, which is why the AMS symbols were created. In their first version (file names msxm10 and msym10) they were programmed in METAFONT78, the predecessor of METAFONT . The current versions (msam10 corresponds to msxm10, msbm10 corresponds to msym10) are originally programmed in Metafont. They were converted into Type 1 format by Blue Sky Research and offered commercially. A consortium of mathematical publishers, including AMS and Springer-Verlag , has made a monetary payment so that Type 1 fonts are now also freely available.

The AMS symbols are represented in MathML by entities .
