AN / ALE-58

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AN / ALE-58 (also called BOL ) is a decoy launcher for combat aircraft . It is produced by the Swedish company Saab Avitronics .

description

The ALE-58 is used to eject chaffs and flares to protect the carrier aircraft from infrared and radar- guided missiles . The system is attached externally to the weapon stations of the carrier aircraft, whereby two launchers with a capacity of up to 120 decoys can be attached to each station. Since the ALE-58 is integrated in a carrier polyon, the usual weapon systems can still be attached to the weapon station, with the system weighing approx. 21 kg when loaded.

In contrast to conventional launch systems, the decoys are loaded into the magazine one after the other and then mechanically ejected one after the other. This means that no additional ignition charges are necessary, and the turbulence of the air from the carrier aircraft creates a broad and intense infrared "flag" that can effectively deceive even modern guided weapons. The system is connected to the on - board avionics using the MIL-STD-1553 or RS-485 data link.
