The AN / ALQ-165 is an airborne system for electronic countermeasures at short to medium distances. It is used by the US -Konzernen Northrop Grumman and ITT produces.

description

The ALQ-165, also known as the “Airborne Self Protection Jammer” (ASPJ), was developed from 1979 and in 1989 reached pre-series status. Despite serious deficiencies that were discovered during the tests, around 100 systems were shipped before the program was temporarily discontinued. However, after the Kosovo War , it turned out that the ALQ-165 had performed better than expected. After various additional tests, it was finally installed internally in 1996 on the F-14D Tomcat and F / A-18C / D Hornet of the US Navy . The Switzerland and South Korea have purchased the system in the recent past.

The ALQ-165 is designed to interfere with radar-controlled guided missiles of all kinds. However, the performance is not sufficient to interfere with powerful search or fire control radars over long distances. The system can be housed both internally and externally in a container and has a modular structure. It can work autonomously, but its efficiency is significantly increased by a connection to the radar warning systems of the carrier aircraft. The unit cost is approximately $ 1 million.

In use, the ALQ-165 worked mostly satisfactorily and reliably despite poor test results. The systems were in use for more than 50,000 hours over the Balkans and Middle East .
