AN / FPN-36
The AN / FPN-36 is an older precision approach radar of the manufacturer ITT Gilfillan. It was installed next to the runway of airfields and has scanned the glide path in the approach direction using two parabolic antennas with a horizontal and a vertical fan diagram . Both parabolic antennas were mechanically swiveled synchronously: the horizontal parabolic reflector moved in a right-left direction, the vertical parabolic mirror nodded in the same cycle.
If visibility was poor, the air traffic controller could use this radar device to observe a landing aircraft. If this deviated from the ideal glide slope, this was communicated to the pilot by radio so that he could correct his approach direction and his descent speed.
This air traffic control radar was later replaced by the precision approach radar PAR-80 . At the airfield of Marinefliegergeschwader 2 in Eggebek , the antennas of the AN / FPN-36 are still on display as a traditional exhibit.
