The AN / SPS-52 is a ship-based 3D - air surveillance radar long range. It was created by the US Corporation Hughes produced.

description

The SPS-52 was developed in the 1960s on the basis of the AN / SPS-39 and consequently also uses the so-called "frequency scanning" technology (FRESCAN) to find the height of radar targets. A wide range of frequencies is used for transmission. A “scan” process starts at a high frequency, which results in the radar signals being sent from the lower part of the antenna. The frequency is now reduced and the location of the radiation moves upwards on the antenna surface. This changes the angle to the radar target, from which its height can ultimately be calculated. Although this method has the advantage that it does without additional mechanical components for height finding and has a higher EloGM resistance, a relatively large and bulky antenna is also required to ensure precise location.

The system is largely digitized, has an MTI operating mode and can be integrated into the AN / SYS-1 combat system. An IFF device has been added to some radars , which can be found above the main antenna. The SPS-52 was, at least in the US Navy , retired and completely replaced by the AN / SPS-48 .

Platforms

Baltimore class , Charles F. Adams class , Brooke class , Hatakaze class , Lütjens class

variants

  • AN / SPS-52A: The basic version.
  • AN / SPS-52B: In this variant, unspecified improvements were made.
  • AN / SPS-52C: This is a major upgrade that was put into service in 1978 and can now be connected to the AN / SYS-2 combat system. The system is now fully digitized and has a larger range thanks to its extensive modernized electronics. Improvements have also been made in the areas of reliability and interference resistance.
