The Hatakaze class ( Japanese は た か ぜ 型 護衛艦 , Hatakaze-gata goeikan ) is a class of two guided missile destroyers of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF).
General
The ships put into service in the 1980s, the main task of which is to hunt submarines and protect a combat group from air attacks , are technically based on the Tachikaze class . Compared to this, the fuselage was enlarged in order to be able to use them as flagships for destroyer units. They are the first gas turbine-propelled units in the service of the Marine Self-Defense Forces.

Hull and drive
The hull of a Hatakaze-class destroyer is 150 meters long, 16.4 meters wide and has a draft of 4.8 meters with a maximum displacement of 5,500 tons . It is powered by four gas turbines - two Kawasaki Spey SM1A for cruising and two Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B for high-speed driving . These act on two shafts with a total output of 72,000 shaft horsepower .
There is a helipad at the stern, but the ships are not equipped with a hangar for the permanent stationing of a helicopter .
Armament and Electronics
The main armament consists of a mounted at the bow Mk.13 starter for Standard Missile - aircraft missiles (at entry nor were RIM-24 Tartar used) and a Mk.112 starter for anti-submarine missiles RUR-5 ASROC . This is together with one of the two Mark 42 guns in front of the bridge . The second gun is located aft behind the superstructure. The armament is completed by two quad starter for RGM-84 Harpoon - anti-ship missile , according an on-side swiveling triple torpedo tube and two phalanx - short range defense systems .
For air surveillance a is 3D radar type SPS-52C used, which is located on the lattice tower. Before this bridge are located above the two fire control radars type SPG-51C and on the aft deck house a Seeaufklärungsradar type OPS-28B.
There are also two chaff launchers on board to deflect approaching missiles .
