The SPG-51 is used to guide RIM-66 SM-1 and RIM-24 Tartar anti-aircraft missiles . It has been produced by Raytheon since 1952. It works in the frequency ranges from 4 to 6 GHz and 8 to 10 GHz with a constant output of 22.5 kW. The following variants are known:

  • AN / SPG-51A: first production model
  • AN / SPG-51B: A fundamentally revised version
  • AN / SPG-51C: Has fully automatic target tracking and increased ECCM capabilities
  • AN / SPG-51D: With this variant, the Doppler effect can also be evaluated for better target tracking
  • AN / SPG-51E: This is a universally applicable system that can also control ship guns and RIM-8 Talos guided weapons
