Hull and drive
The hull of a destroyer of the Shirane class is 159 m long and 17.5 m wide, the draft is 5.3 m, the displacement is 7,500 ts . The deck superstructures are characterized by the large helicopter landing pad at the stern, which takes up a third of the ship's length. The middle third except the deckhouse, the rear half of which houses the helicopter hangar.
It is driven by two geared turbines, which deliver their 70,000 HP output to two shafts with one screw each. The steam is generated in two IHI boilers with a pressure of 60 bar.
Armament and Electronics
In addition to the eight- fold ASROC launcher in front of the bridge, the main armament is the two 5-inch Mk. 42 guns . For air defense, the ships have an eight-fold launcher for RIM-7 Sea Sparrow on the hangar roof. On both sides of the superstructure there are two swing-out triple torpedo tubes for Mk. 46 torpedoes . The end of the 1980s both destroyer were also with two Mk.-15 phalanx - short range defense systems equipped.
As a board helicopter , three were originally Mitsubishi HSS-2B Sea Kings on board, these have now been through three anti-submarine helicopter SH-60J replaced.
The ships use an OPS-12 as aerial reconnaissance radar, while the navigation radar is an OPS-28. In addition to the OQS-101 bow sonar , the Kurama also has a tow sonar .
