AN / APG-66

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AN / APG-66 is an airborne radar designed by Westinghouse (now Northrop Grumman ) as an on-board radar for the F-16 A / B Fighting Falcon from General Dynamics . The radar was introduced at the same time as the first F-16 in 1985. The AN / APG-66 is a Doppler pulse radar that works in the I / J band. Thanks to its modular structure, the radar can be maintained more easily and modernized more quickly. It also has a variety of operating modes , which enables the combat against air, land and sea targets. The successor model is the AN / APG-68 , which is integrated in all F-16s since block 25 (F-16 C / D).

variants

  • APG-66 (V) 2 : Upgrade of the basic model. New signal processors, greater radiation power, increased reliability. The range in a difficult operating environment (many ground echoes, EloKa ) has been increased to 83 km.
  • APG-66 (V) 3 : Identical to the (V) 2 variant, but also has a continuous wave radar operating mode.
  • APG-66 (V) X : Improved version of the (V) 2 / (V) 3 variant with increased range.
  • APG-66T : Version with track-while-scan capabilities (allows multiple targets to be tracked while the radar is still in search mode).
  • ARG-1 : A modification of the (V) 2 variant for the A-4AR Skyhawks of the Argentine Air Force .
  • APG-66H : Adapted version for the BAE Hawk of the Royal Air Force .
  • APG-66J : Adapted version as part of the Japanese F-4EJ Phantom II upgrade program.
  • APG-66NT : version for the T-39 of the US Navy .
  • APG-66NZ : Installed as part of the KAHU upgrade program for New Zealand's A-4 Skyhawks .
  • AN / APQ-164 : for the Rockwell B-1 bomber, with a passive phased array antenna .
