An example of ANSI type.

As ANSI type refers to a type of ASCII art that using ANSI BBS - Escape sequences is created. This offers more design options than with pure ASCII , since with ANSI X3.64 or ECMA-48 through control characters and control sequences etc. a. Color selection, cursor control, key programming (e.g. for simple macros ) and simple PC music output is enabled.

history

Like ASCII-Art, ANSI-Art originated in the subculture of home computers. In the mid-1970s, the ANSI X3.64 standard, which was adopted in Europe by the European Computer Manufacturer Alliance (ECMA) as ECMA-48, laid the foundation for expanded output options, although this was initially only available in a professional environment the DEC VT100 terminals. With the advent of Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), however, the triumphant advance of the IBM PC had already begun, on which in the vast majority of cases MS-DOS or PC DOS was the operating system. An implementation of ANSI X3.64 was provided on this with ANSI.SYS , which many BBS operators like to use for ANSI Art. However, ASCII-Art was by no means displaced because the hacking culture of Release Groups also includes ASCII-Art, ANSI-Art as well as animated GIFs and demos.

Differences to ASCII-Art

By using ANSI escape sequences , it is possible to use colors and also to have text flash. Simple music, ANSI music , can also be played via the PC loudspeaker using ANSI control characters .

While ASCII art does not require any special configuration on an IBM PC-compatible PC, an ANSI driver such as the ANSI.SYS contained in MS-DOS must be configured for ANSI art . The emergence of ANSI bombs also meant that ANSI Art could not assert itself as a replacement for ASCII Art.
