American Society of Mechanical Engineers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers ( ASME ) is a professional association of mechanical engineers in the United States . The association, based in New York City , was founded in 1880 and has around 130,000 members (as of 2013). Outside the USA, ASME has offices in Belgium, China and India (as of 2015).

The association focuses on

  • promoting science and engineering through the organization of congresses and symposia,
  • further training through the organization of courses and lectures,
  • the development of technical guidelines and standards,
  • the auditing and certification of companies according to the published ASME regulations.

The ASME is subdivided into 37 specialist societies, e.g. B. for aircraft construction , materials technology , nanotechnology , (nuclear) power plant technology , railway technology , heat transfer , fluid mechanics , pressure vessel and pipeline technology .

ASME also has district associations in many countries outside the United States. There is currently no district association in Germany (2005).

In the pressure vessel sector , the ASME BPVC ( ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code ) is reissued every two years. In addition, ASME publishes books and magazines such as the monthly journal Mechanical Engineering .

ASME standards are used in many countries around the world. The knowledge and application of these standards is therefore also important for many companies based in Germany in order to be able to export goods and services. An example of this is stamping a pressure vessel with the ASME Certification Mark and the U-Designator . This is a confirmation that all requirements of ASME Code Section VIII, Division 1 for unfired pressure vessels are met. Pressure-bearing components with this type of ASME certification can only be manufactured by container manufacturers who are audited by ASME every three years. The ASME Code can also serve as a basis for compliance with the European Pressure Equipment Directive. Pressure equipment that corresponds to both European and American standards can be offered as uniform products worldwide.

In Germany, the Association of German Engineers (VDI) fulfills a function similar to that of ASME in many areas.
