aTunes is a free ( GPL- licensed) audio player .
history
At the beginning of 2006 aTunes was created because the author Alex Aranda was looking for an application that could read the tags of the songs on his Apple iPod . It should also be possible to display the songs on the hard drive in an organized manner. The first version was aTunes 0.3 on March 24, 2006. Gradually, new functions were added, including volunteers who do part of the development work. The number of translations also increased, so that today 26 languages are available. With the release of the Jukebox Power Pack, the aTunes team has confirmed its willingness to cooperate with the Jajuk project, which is under the GPL, and Jukes, which is under a Creative Commons license.
Functions
aTunes is developed in Java and can therefore run on a variety of platforms. MPlayer or LAME and other free programs are used for playback, encoding and decoding .
aTunes plays Vorbis , MP3 , FLAC , AAC and other file formats, manages music collections, supports the playback of web radios and the retrieval of podcasts , can read music from audio CDs and edit metadata .
aTunes also offers support for various Internet services such as Last.fm , with which users can send their played songs to this service, Audioscrobbler (now integrated into Last.fm), with which similar music can be found, and retrieval of song texts or context information from Wikipedia , YouTube or Google Video .
