The AU Optronics Corporation (AUO) ( Chinese 友達光電 / 友达光电 , Pinyin Yǒudáguāngdiàn ) now belongs to BenQ Group and is the largest manufacturer of LCD flat panels based in Taiwan in the city of Hsinchu . In 2007 AU Optronics was the world's largest manufacturer of LCD flat screens. The company was founded in 2001 by Acer Display Technology Inc. (founded in 1996) and Unipac Optoelectronics Corporation . In October 2006 it merged with Quanta Display Inc. in order to occupy 20% of the global TFT-LCD market with its production. AUO makes LCD elements for companies such as BenQ and ViewSonic . The main markets for AUO products are the USA , Japan , South Korea , the Netherlands and the People's Republic of China . AUO is the first company for TFT-LCD products to be listed on the NYSE . In 2004, it ranked 17th on Business Week in the Global IT Companies category .
