A Greek and Arabic Lexicon

A Greek and Arabic Lexicon ( GALex ) is the first dictionary of Graeco Arabic studies and records the Arabic equivalents for Greek words that are used in Arabic translations of preserved Greek texts from the fields of natural sciences, medicine and philosophy, which date from the 8th . date to the 10th century.

The basis of the development are essentially glossaries published in text editions and also unpublished glossaries as well as various other sources. In addition to the lexical lemmas , the volumes each contain indices of the Greek-Arabic equivalents, the Greek proper names and transliterated words, deviating Greek and Arabic passages and the Greek authors cited in the context passages.

On the one hand, the dictionary is an important tool for understanding Arabic in its scientific and philosophical application and thus for editing Arabic texts that have been translated directly from Greek or whose drafting was based on an Arabic translation of a Greek text. On the other hand, it enriches knowledge of classical and Byzantine Greek and the reception of Greek texts from late antiquity and of Byzantine literature before Photios in the Arab world. The Greek-Arabic glossary and the index of deviating Greek passages facilitate the constitution of Greek texts that have been translated into Arabic.

In 2002 the dictionary on the Greek-Arabic translations of the 9th century by the Arabist Manfred Ullmann was published with two supplement volumes (2006/2007).
