A Pub with No Beer is a country song made famous in Australia and the United States in 1957 by Slim Dusty . Bobbejaan Schoepen published a Dutch version in 1959 under the title Café zonder bier , a German version followed in 1960 under the title I stand at the bar and I have no money .

history

The song was an adaptation by Gordon Parsons of the poem "A Pub Without Beer" originally written by Dan Sheahan of Inham , North Queensland (originally from Newmarket , Ireland ). In 1957, “A Pub With No Beer” became the first Australian gold single. In 1959, Dusty wrote a sequel, The Answer To A Pub With No Beer, which explains the cause of the failed beer delivery.

In May 2001 the Australasian Performing Rights Association (ARPA) celebrated its 75th birthday with a list of the best Australian songs of all time. A Pub With No Beer was number five on the list by a forum of 100 experts . In June 2008 the song was added to the Australian Sounds register of the National Film and Sound Archives.

Europe

The Belgian entertainer Bobbejaan Schoepen has recorded the song in different languages. Its Dutch version (“Café zonder bier”) debuted in 1959 and the German version followed in 1960 under the title “I'm standing at the bar and have no money”. The song became a number one hit in Belgium and Austria and stayed in the German charts for 30 weeks in 1960, where it reached number 6.

“A Pub With No Beer” is also the theme song and title of a Belgian-British film from 1962, which became known under the titles De Ordonnans and At the Drop of a Head . In 1999 the alternative rock band Dead Man Ray wrote a (partly) new soundtrack for the film and went on tour with it in the Netherlands.

America

In 1960, Benny Barnes from Beaumont, Texas Americanized A Pub With No Beer and released the song under the new title With No Beer Bar . The song became a regional hit on the Hall Way label. The melody of this version is almost identical to Stephen Foster's Beautiful Dreamer . In 1985 Bar With No Beer by Tom T. Hall on the album Song in a Seashell added. Johnny Cash , who also played the song, advised him to record it.
