The law on the formation of the city ​​region of Aachen (Aachen law) of February 26, 2008 was unanimously adopted and passed on February 21, 2008 according to the recommendation and report of the Committee for Local Policy and Administrative Structural Reform after the 2nd reading in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament December 2007 the draft law was also unanimously referred to this committee after the first reading in the state parliament.

With the law, the district of Aachen was dissolved at the end of October 20, 2009, and from the nine municipalities of the district of Aachen and the city ​​of Aachen , the regional authority of the city ​​region of Aachen was formed as a new local association of a special kind with effect from October 21, 2009 .

The law was promulgated in the Law and Ordinance Gazette for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia number 9, issued in Düsseldorf on March 12, 2008.
