The Aachen Competence Center for the History of Science ( AKWG ) is an institution spanning subjects and institutions. It serves to bundle the scientific-historical competences available at RWTH Aachen with the aim of promoting interdisciplinary exchange and thus getting projects in research and teaching off the ground.

In addition, the event and teaching activities in the participating institutions should receive impulses from the interaction of the individual subdisciplines, so that the history of science is represented in the university landscape according to its importance. The association, founded in 2006, is one of the official research and competence centers of RWTH Aachen University. The spokesman for the AKWG is Dominik Groß , director of the Institute for the History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine (GTE) and holder of the chair of the same name. Christine Roll , dean of the Philosophical Faculty, holder of the professorship, head of the university archive and representative of the rectorate acts as the second speaker . Julia Nebe is the managing director (as of October 2016).

The AKWG has its own series of scientific books, the "Studies of the Aachen Competence Center for the History of Science" ( Kassel University Press ). From 2007 to 2016, 17 themed volumes were published in this series. It is dedicated to the investigation of specific cultures of knowledge that shape modernity in a special way and vary according to social and institutional contexts. The focus of the discussions are the social and cultural conditions for the development of science, science as a social organization, social attributions of the achievements of science for society as well as the figures of thought and artefacts provided by the sciences in economy, society and politics.
