Aarsland is a funeral doom band.

history

The musician Ruslan Ismailov, then living in Novosibirsk, experimented with Dark Ambient and Drone Doom even before he came up with a name . He dates the first demo recordings to a period between 2005 and 2007. Around 2012 he formed a first publication from the ideas and gave the project the name Aarsland, which he also adopted as a pseudonym. In 2018 Ismailov moved to Moscow , from where he has been running Aarsland ever since.

Ismailov self- published many of his recordings as music downloads via Bandcamp . In contrast , the albums Gedenkstatte and Rasputin , released in 2015 and 2018, were also released as a physical sound carrier in cooperation with the Russian metal label Narcoleptica Productions . The international reception of the publications, however, remained cautiously positive. Riccardo Veronese praised Gedenkstatte for the webzine Doom-Metal.com as an album that should especially please people "who prefer the dark side of Funeral Doom".

style

Veronese describes the atmosphere of the music as "dark, evil and creepy." Ismailov himself describes the music as a crossover of dark ambient, drone and black doom . According to the band presentation written for the webzine Doom-Metal.com, Ismailov plays a "relentlessly evil-sounding and dissonant Funeral Doom" with Aarsland. For a classifying comparison, reference is made to the American project Hierophant . The music combines “heavy crushing passages” with “cutting guitars” with elements of drone doom and dark ambient. In the meantime, the singing is varied and "comes into its own". For singing, Veronese refers to reference points in Black Metal that can also be found in other areas of music.
