The Aasee in the east of the city of Ibbenbüren in the Tecklenburger Land was created in the 1970s as a flood retention basin and recreational area as part of the motorway 30 extension. Sailing and pedal boats can be used, motor boats only with a special permit or for life-saving measures in an emergency. Swimming is not permitted in the lake, but the lake can be used for ice-skating activities in winter if the ice cover is suitable. Fishing is also permitted outside the fish spawning zones and the boat harbor for members of the fishing club and holders of a day or week ticket.
Special features at the lake are a large skate park in the northeastern end and the "train station" of the Ibbenbüren – Hövelhof railway line , from which special trips to Bad Laer can be made with steam locomotives and historic wagons in the summer months .
In recent years, special events such as the Aasee Run or the Aasee Splash have attracted many visitors to the Aasee. The Aaseesplash is a major musical and cultural event that took place for the third time in 2006. Well-known musicians from the region, flea markets and competitions of all categories rounded off the festival. In addition, a beach zone was set up in the area of the boat harbor .
In 2005, the desludging of the upper basin of the lake began, as real "mud islands" had formed in the middle of the lake. This attempt was canceled in the course of 2006 because the technology used was inadequate. In 2008, a company specializing in dredging was able to vacuum the sludge that had accumulated over the years. Thus the Ibbenbüren Aasee now has a minimum depth of 1.5 m again.
