The Aasiaat Museum ( Danish Aasiaat Museum , Greenlandic Aasiaat Katersugaasiviat ) is the local museum of Aasiaat .
history
From the end of the 1960s there were plans to open a museum in Aasiaat. It was originally intended to be installed in the whaler's commander's apartment (B-26), but the building was deemed too small. In addition, the building was not supposed to be fully restored until 1982 and they didn't want to wait that long. Instead, on December 3, 1978, the museum opened in house B-404, where Frederik Lynge had previously lived. In 1986 the museum was officially recognized by the government. In September 2002 the museum moved to the colonial administrator's apartment (B-24), which had just been renovated for this purpose.
building
The buildings currently belonging to the Aasiaat Museum are:
- B-24 : The main building is the former home of the colonial administrator. It has served as the actual museum since 2002.
- B-404 : House B-404 was formerly the home of Frederik Lynge and was the location of the museum from 1978 to 2001. Today it serves as the museum's warehouse.
- B-1360 : It is a replica of a peat wall house completed in 1998 and demonstrates the earlier way of life of the Greenlanders.
Buildings B-24 and B-404 are protected. For detailed descriptions of the history and architecture of the individual buildings, see the list of architectural monuments in Aasiaat .
