Ulrich Mertens
Ulrich AJ Mertens (* 1957 in Fürstenberg (Westphalia) ) is a German photographer , artist , author and lecturer who has dedicated himself to documenting the energy transition.
Career
From 1979 to 1985 Mertens studied visual communication at the FH-Bielefeld . He has been freelance since 1984 . Work stays took him to Marseille , Munich , Vienna , Offenburg and Worpswede . In 1987 he opened the agency “Atelier for Art and Photography”. Ulrich Mertens taught at the University of Paderborn , at the Institute for Design in Rheda-Wiedenbrück and at the Symmedia Academy for Design at the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) in Bielefeld . Mertens place of work is Hamburg .
In 2006, Mertens designed a temporary work of art, an artificial poppy circle, on 80,000 square meters. The oil price shock at the beginning of the 1970s, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 and climate change and its consequences were and are important moments for Mertens, which motivated him, mankind's search for energy - initially in coal and uranium mining , now in the field of regenerative energy generation - to pursue. With his photographs of wind turbines he would like to show that wind turbines not only contribute to “saving the landscape” - as wind farm opponents claim - but can also be seen as a symbol of hope and progress in terms of climate protection .
