Abaesamis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

According to Pliny, Abaesamis (other readings: Baesamis , Besamnis ) was a city in the extreme north of the Arabian Peninsula, founded by Semiramis , inhabited before his time by the Omani , later abandoned and at that time already deserted . It is known only through its mention in his Naturalis historia 6, 145.

According to Alfred von Gutschmid, the Omani should not be located in present-day Oman , but rather in the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula on the northern Persian Gulf or near Basra , where they came from their northern migration, as evidenced by Arabic sources. Due to the frequent relocation of the mouth of the Euphrates , numerous settlements have perished there.

According to the orientalist and numismatist Otto Blau, the name is of Aramaic origin; it is said to be an old mint.
