Abalan (also Abalène ) is a district of Agadez in Niger .
The settlement is located outside the historical center of Agadez on the northwestern periphery of the city. Abalan was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by a Tuareg leader from the Algerian Hoggar , who let his exceptionally small and hairy camels graze here. This is where the place name Abalan comes from, which means “small and hairy” in the Tuareg language . Due to severe droughts, the original nomad camp became a permanent settlement.
The neighborhood is a center of traditional tanning , known as jima fata . The animal skins are treated with the fruits of the Arabian gum acacia , among other things .
At the 2012 census, Abalan had 4,385 residents who lived in 754 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 883 in 141 households.
