Abasan as-Saghira ( Arabic عبسان الصغيرة, DMG ʿAbasān as-ṣaġīra , also Abasan as-Seghira ), or officially Abasan al-Jadida , is a city with around 7,000 inhabitants in the Chan Yunis governorate in the southern Gaza Strip . It is located south-east of the district town of Chan Yunis near the border with Israel . The name translates as Abasan the small , in contrast to the neighboring town Abasan al-Kabira with about 23,000 inhabitants, whose name Abasan means the big one . Both localities have grown together in recent years and now form an urban space by Chan Yunis. The last unemployment rate was 28% (2011), the average daily income was 55 Israeli shekels (2011, which at that time was just over 11 euros ). As a result of the Fatah-Hamas conflict in 2006 and 2007, which resulted in the de facto partition of the Palestinian Autonomous Territories , Hamas took sole control of the city's administration.
