Abbey of St. Walburga (Abbey of the Holy Walburga) is a monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Virginia Dale (Colorado) in the United States that the Federation of the Bavarian Benedictine Abbeys belongs.

history

Abbess Maria Anna Benedicta von Spiegel OSB from the Bavarian Abbey of St. Walburg in Eichstätt initiated the founding of a monastery in Boulder in Colorado / USA in 1935 in view of the increasingly anti-church policies of the National Socialists in order to create a possible refuge for the nuns of her abbey. The first nuns came from Eichstätt and from the St. Erentrud Abbey in Salzburg . In 1951, the newly founded monastery received the legal status of a dependent priory and thus the right to accept and train novices . In 1986 the monastery became an independent priory and in 1989 it became an abbey .

In 1997 the growing community left the now too small monastery in Boulder and moved into new, larger monastery buildings in Virginia Dale.
