Abdel Halim Hafez ( Arabic عبد الحليم حافظ, DMG ʿAbd al-Ḥalīm Ḥāfiẓ ), actually Abdel Halim Isma'il Schabana (born June 21, 1929 in Al-Helwat , Ash-Sharqiyya (governorate) , Egypt ; † March 30, 1977 in London , England ), was from the 1950s to 1970s one of the most popular Egyptian singers and actors , both in Egypt and throughout the Arab world.

life and career

Between 1955 and 1969 he played the male lead in 15 Egyptian films. In 1955 he co-directed with Ibrahim Emara in Lahn el wafaa . In the same year he was seen in Helmy Halim's musical Ayyamine el helwa at the side of Omar Sharif . The genre of the romantic musical was then also the dominant film genre in his career as a singer and actor.

Hafez died on March 30, 1977 as a result of chronic schistosomiasis , which he had suffered from since childhood. Millions of people attended his funeral procession. His death was so shocking that four Egyptian women are reported to have committed suicide.
