Abe Nobuya

Abe Nobuya ( Japanese 阿 部 展 也 , real first name Yoshibumi ( 芳 文 ); born February 4, 1913 in Niigata Prefecture ; died May 7, 1971 in Rome ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction and photographer of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Abe Nobuya was born in Niigata Prefecture but grew up in Tokyo. He dropped out of middle school in fourth grade and set out to study painting and photography. He was close to Surrealism and published in 1937 "Distance to Fairy Tales" ( 妖精 の 距離 , Yōsei no kyori ), a book with surrealist paintings for a collection of poems by Takiguchi Shūzō , which was published by the Shunchōkai. From 1932 he submitted his work to the "Society for Independent Art" ( 独立 美術 協会 , Dokuritsu bijutsu kyōkai ).

In 1939 Abe took part in the founding of the "Society for Art and Culture" ( 美術 文化 協会 , Bijutsu bunka kyōkai ), together with a group of surrealists around the painter Fukuzawa Ichirō . During the Pacific War he traveled to the northeastern area of ​​China, and in 1941 he stayed in the Philippines as a member of the press corps of the Japanese army.

After the war, Abe gained public attention with images such as “Adam and Eve” ( ア ダ ム と イ ヴ , Adamu to Ivu ; 1949) and “Hunger” ( 飢 え , Ue ; 1949). In 1953 he traveled to India to show his work at the 2nd Indian International Art Exhibition . Later he turned to abstract painting, and since the 1960s he has also created collages. - Abe was also active internationally and in 1957 became a member of the Executive Committee of the International League of Plastic Arts , took part in the Asia Artists' Conference in 1959 and was a juror for the 3rd Guggenheim Art Prize. After 1967 he was active as a photographer and designer in Europe. In 1969, at the invitation of the Yugoslav Republic, he went on a trip to Sarajevo, was in Bulgaria and Ireland, then stayed in Italy. He died in Rome in 1971 after a sudden illness.
