Abel Barrera Hernández (born April 10, 1960 in Tlapa de Comonfort , Guerrero state , Mexico ) is a Mexican priest and anthropologist and is one of the leading human rights activists for the indigenous people in his country.

Life

Abel Barrera Hernández was born in Tlapa de Comonfort in the Mexican state of Guerrero, as one of four children. Between 1982 and 1994 he studied theology and later anthropology at the Escuela Nacional de Antropología y Historia in Mexico City .

He is close to liberation theology . In 1994 he founded the Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montana , the "Center for Human Rights", in the mountains of Tlachinolla. This center campaigns for the rights of the persecuted indigenous people in Mexico and was able to achieve success in international courts , among other things . The organization is supported by several church and non-church organizations. Abel Barrera Hernández has received death threats for over ten years.

In May 2011 Abel Barrera Hernández was awarded the Amnesty International Human Rights Prize of the German section of Amnesty International .
