history

In the 7th century monks, possibly from Lindisfarne , founded a monastery on this site. The Aebbercurnig plant was described in the notes of Beda the Venerable . Around 685 the monastery was probably abandoned temporarily, possibly as a result of the Battle of Dunnichen Mere , but used again from the 8th century. Numerous crosses have survived from this period. No remnants of the monastery are visible on the surface today. However, parts of the oval complex have been thoroughly archaeologically examined.

Abercorn Church was built on the site of the monastery in the late 11th century. In 1597 the building was largely rebuilt and only a few fragments of the old church have been preserved. Over the centuries, buildings or parts of buildings have been added several times. The Duddingstone Aisle of the Lords of Abercorn dates from 1603 and 1612 and the Binns Aisle from 1618. In 1708 the Hope family had the Hopestoun Aisle built. In 1893 the Abercorn Church was restored and partially redesigned. In particular, the west facade and the interior were redesigned. The work carried out also included the construction of the bell tower.
