Abercorn ( Gaelic : Obar Chùirnidh ) is a hamlet in the north of the Scottish Council Area West Lothian or in the traditional county of Linlithgowshire . It is located about eight kilometers east of Linlithgow and 15 kilometers west of central Edinburgh near the right bank of the Firth of Forth .

history

Today the hamlet of Abercorn consists of only a few houses. In the past, however, the location was of greater importance. Bede the Venerable already mentioned the Parish “Aebercurnig” in 696 , a bishopric and monastery site. It is possible that it was monks from Lindisfarne Monastery who founded the monastery in the 7th century. Around 685 the monastery was probably abandoned temporarily, possibly as a result of the Battle of Dunnichen Mere , but used again from the 8th century. Today no remains of the monastery are visible on the surface. The origins of Abercorn Church date back to the late 11th century.

In 1160, when Abercorn was added to the Barony of Aberlady , there was a castle in Abercorn. This later passed to the Douglas clan and was destroyed in 1455 by the troops of James II . The Scottish Crown was a gift to Claud Hamilton, 1st Lord Paisley Abercorn. After his expropriation, it was Jacob VI. , which restored the property of the Hamiltons. Claud Hamilton's son James was made the first Earl of Abercorn . Directly east of the village, work began in 1699 on the construction of Hopetoun House , the seat of the later Earls of Hopetoun .

traffic

Abercorn is only connected to the road network via secondary roads. The A904 ( Falkirk - South Queensferry ) and the M9 motorway run south . With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport located about eight kilometers southeast.
