Life

He was a younger son of James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran and the Lady Margaret Douglas, daughter of James Douglas, 3rd Earl of Morton . He was baptized in Edinburgh Castle on June 9, 1546 .

In 1553 he held the post of Comtur of Paisley Abbey in Renfrewshire . From April 1560 to February 1562 he was one of the noble hostages sent to England under the Treaty of Berwick to depose the Scottish regent Marie de Guise .

In 1568 he helped Queen Mary escape from Loch Leven Castle , commanded the vanguard of the defeat at Langside and then fled with the Queen to England. On August 19, 1568, he was ostracized and his lands were confiscated. He was also said to have participated in the murders of the Scottish regents Moray in 1570 and Lennox in 1571. On February 23, 1573 he was rehabilitated and got his lands back.

On November 10, 1579, he and his brother John were ostracized again and his lands were confiscated. Both fled into exile in England, Claud soon moved on to France. On December 10, 1585 he was rehabilitated again, got his lands back, and was admitted to the Scottish Privy Council .

On July 29, 1587 he was given the hereditary title of Lord Paisley . He sought a balance between King James VI. and his mother, Queen Maria. Because he corresponded with King Philip II of Spain on behalf of Mary , he was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle from March to August 1589 for a conspiracy. From 1590 he increasingly suffered from a mental illness, which is why he withdrew from the public. He finally died in 1621.
