The Dukes are head of an Irish branch line of the Scottish Hamilton family , the Hamiltons of Abercorn . The Dukes' family seat is Barons Court in Newtownstewart between Omagh and Strabane in County Tyrone , Northern Ireland .

Award

The title was created on August 10, 1868 for Lord Lieutenant of Ireland James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Abercorn .

Subordinate title

Together with the Dukedom , the 1st Duke, also in the Peerage of Ireland, was awarded the subordinate title of Marquess of Hamilton of Strabane , in the County of Tyrone.

The lineage of the 1st Duke goes back to James Hamilton , the son of 1st Lord Paisley , who in turn is a younger son of the 2nd Earl of Arran . He was bestowed on April 5, 1603 the title of Lord (of) Abercorn in the County of Linlithgow and on July 10, 1606 the title of Earl of Abercorn , with subordinate titles Lord Paisley, Hamilton, Mountcashell and Kirkpatrick . He was heir in 1618 by his eldest son James Hamilton, 2nd Baron Hamilton of Strabane , who had been raised to Baron Hamilton of Strabane in the County of Tyrone on May 8, 1617 , and in 1621 by his grandfather the title created for this on July 29, 1587 Lord Paisley in the County of Renfrew inherited. The baron title belongs to the Peerage of Ireland , while all other aforementioned titles belong to the Peerage of Scotland . The baron title was passed on to a branch line of the family after him, but was reunited with the other titles by the 5th Earl around 1680. On September 2, 1701, the 6th Earl was given the titles Viscount Strabane and Baron Mountcastle in the County of Tyrone, both in the Peerage of Ireland, and in 1679 he had the title of Baronet , of Donalong in the County of Tyrone and of Neneagh in the County of Tipperary, who was created in 1660 in the Baronetage of Ireland for his father Sir George Hamilton, 1st Baronet (around 1607–1679). The 8th Earl was also awarded the title Viscount Hamilton , of Hamilton on August 8, 1786 . This title belongs to the Peerage of Great Britain and, unlike the Scottish and Irish titles, was associated with a hereditary seat in the House of Lords . The 9th Earl was raised to Marquess of Abercorn on October 15, 1790 for his services as a member of the House of Commons . All of these titles have been listed as subordinate titles to the duke since 1868.

The Heir Apparent des Dukes bears the courtesy title Marquess of Hamilton , whose Heir Apparent in turn bears the courtesy title Viscount Strabane .
