James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn KG (born July 4, 1934 in London ) is a British nobleman and politician and was Lord Steward of the Household from 2001 to 2009 .

Life

James Hamilton was a son of James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn , and his wife Mary Catherine Crichton. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Agricultural College at Cirencester and received the courtesy title of Marquess of Hamilton on the death of his grandfather . He followed his father in 1979 as the Duke of Abercorn .

From 1964 to 1970 the future Duke was a member of the Ulster Unionist Party in the House of Commons for the constituency " Fermanagh and South Tyrone ". He is one of the largest landowners in Northern Ireland and is based in Baronscourt near Omagh .

Since October 17, 2012 he has been Chancellor of the Order of the Garter .

The Duke married Alexandra Anastasia (* 1946), daughter of Harold Phillips, with whom he has the following children:

  • James Harold Charles Hamilton, Marquess of Hamilton (* 1969);
  • Lady Sophia Alexandra Hamilton (* 1973) ⚭ Anthony Loyd;
  • Lord Nicholas Edward Hamilton (* 1979) ⚭ Tatiana Kronberg.
