James Albert Edward Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn KG (born November 30, 1869 in Piccadilly , London , † September 12, 1953 ibid), was a British nobleman and politician and the first governor of Northern Ireland .

Life

James Hamilton was the eldest son of James Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Abercorn and his wife Mary Anna Curzon-Howe. His godfather was the Prince of Wales . As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title Viscount Hamilton from 1869 to 1885 and the courtesy title Marquess of Hamilton from 1885 to 1913 .

He attended Harrow School in London. He served with the rank of captain in the 1st Life Guards and as a major in the North Irish Horse Regiment . He later became an honorary colonel in the 9th Anti-Aircraft Regiment .

In 1900 he was as a deputy for the constituency of Londonderry City in the House of Commons voted. From 1903 to 1905 he held the court office of the Treasurer of the Household . When his father died in 1913, he inherited him as the 3rd Duke of Abercorn . This gave him a seat in the House of Lords and left the House of Commons. In 1922 he was taken to the Privy Council received for Northern Ireland and was from 1922 to 1945 the first governor of Northern Ireland ( Governor of Northern Ireland ). In 1945 he was also admitted to the British Privy Council.

In 1928 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion and was awarded the Royal Victorian Chain in 1945. He was also Knight of Grace of the Order of Saint John .

In 1894 he married Lady Rosalind Bingham (1869-1958), daughter of Charles George Bingham, 4th Earl of Lucan, with whom he had the following children:

  • Lady Mary Cecilia Rhodesia Hamilton (1896-1984), ⚭ (1) 1917–1930 Robert Kenyon-Slaney, ⚭ (2) 1930 Sir John Little Gilmour, 2nd Baronet;
  • Lady Cynthia Elinor Beatrix Hamilton (1897–1972), ⚭ 1919 Albert Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer , she is the grandmother of Princess Diana ;
  • Lady Katharine Hamilton (1900–1985), ⚭ 1930 Reginald Henry Seymour;
  • James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn (1904-1979);
  • Lord Claud David Hamilton (1907–1968), ⚭ 1946 Genesta Mary Heath.
