James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn

James Edward Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn (born February 29, 1904 in London , † June 4, 1979 ), was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

James Hamilton was the elder son of James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn and his wife Rosalind Bingham. As his father's apparent marriage , he was given the courtesy title of Viscount Strabane at birth and that of Marquess of Hamilton at the age of 9 . He followed his father in 1953 as the 4th Duke of Abercorn .

James Hamilton was educated at Eton College . He served in the British Army and subsequently became a Captain Reserve Officer in the Regular Army Reserve . From 1946 he held the offices of County Councilor and High Sheriff of County Tyrone and in 1950 was Lord-Lieutenant of that county.

Since 1928 he was married to Lady Kathleen Crichton (1905–1990), daughter of Henry William Crichton, Viscount Crichton (1872–1914), with whom he had the following children:

  • Lady Moyra Kathleen Hamilton (* 1930), ⚭ 1966 Peter Colin Drummond Campbell;
  • James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Abercorn (* 1934);
  • Lord Claude Anthony Hamilton (* 1939), ⚭ 1982 Catherine Janet Faulkner.
