Baron Hamilton of Strabane
Baron Hamilton , of Strabane in the County of Tyrone , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland . To distinguish it from other Baronies Hamilton , the title is also called Baron Hamilton of Strabane .
Award and history of the title
The title was created on May 8, 1617 by Letters patent for the Hon. James Hamilton . The award was made with the special addition that in the absence of male offspring, the title could also be passed on to his father's other sons. In 1618 he inherited his father as 2nd Earl of Abercorn and in 1621 his grandfather as 2nd Lord Paisley . In 1634 he renounced the barony in favor of his younger brother, the Hon. Claud Hamilton. Formally, he gave the barony back to the crown, which re-awarded the title to Claud on August 14, 1634, with the addition that the title is considered to have been created on May 8, 1617 in terms of protocol ranking , so that Claud becomes 2nd baron was counted. The Earldom and the Lordship, however, fell to his son George Hamilton as 3rd Earl when the 1st Baron died and to Claud Hamilton, 5th Baron Hamilton of Strabane , the grandson of the 2nd Baron, when he died around 1683 . Since he fought against the king on the side of the Jacobites in 1690 , he was posthumously outlawed in 1691 and the barony was revoked from him. His younger brother and heir Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Abercorn , achieved the ostracism and restoration of the title of 5th Baron Hamilton of Strabane on May 24, 1692. The barony has since been a subordinate title of the respective Earls of Abercorn.
The 9th Earl was also raised to the Marquess of Abercorn and his grandson, the 2nd Marquess, also to the Duke of Abercorn and Marquess of Hamilton of Strabane in 1790 . The above titles have since been subordinate titles of the respective Dukes of Abercorn.
